NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) Two cohorts of the so-called Cannibal Cop were convicted Friday evening of scheming to carry out gruesome fantasies of kidnapping, raping, torturing and killing women and girls.
As WCBS 880′s Irene Cornell reported, the verdict against a retired New York high school librarian and a New Jersey auto mechanic came down after 6:30 p.m. Friday.
The verdicts in Christopher Asch and Michael Van Hises conspiracy trial came a year after a conviction in a headline-grabbing case of a police officer accused of plotting abductions and cannibalism. A fourth man, a former hospital police chief, pleaded guilty in January.
Together, the cases plumbed an online underground where people share macabre fetishes, and the prosecutions hinged on the boundaries between imagining and actually intending to bring fantasies to life.

NEW YORK A federal appeals court has cleared former NYPD officer Gilberto Valle, who was accused of scheming to kidnap and slaughter 100 woman, and eat their remains, according to reports.
The so-called "cannibal cop" was found guilty two years ago of conspiring to kidnap, kill and cook a list of woman he maintained online, including his wife.
However, Valle never acted on any of the plans investigators found through his digital correspondence.
In July of 2014, Valle's conviction was overturned. Federal Judge Paul Gardephe ruled there was insufficient evidence to support Valle's conviction, and subsequently wrote "it is more likely than not the case that all of Valle's Internet communications about kidnapping are fantasy role-play."
The federal appeal court upheld the lower court's decision Thursday in a 2-1 vote, according to the NY Post.

...Circuit Judge Chester Straub eviscerated his colleagues' opinion in a scathing dissent.
This is not a case about governmental intrusion on ones personal inclinations and fantasies nor is it a case about governmental punishment of one's thoughts, he wrote.
It is, instead, a jury's determination of guilt for a conspiracy based on definitive conduct ... a police officers use of the official database to obtain, outside the boundaries of his official duties, data about a woman whom he knew.
