Govs. Cuomo, Pataki Hit Airwaves With John Catsimatidis To Defend Charter Schools
BY CELESTE KATZ
Gov. Cuomo, on the maiden voyage of John Catsimatidis' new radio show, defended charter schools as "little laboratories" that spark dialog about larger changes in education -- something he said entrenched interests want to cut off at the knees.
Charter schools, the critics will say, Well, theyre not the answer. They only handle a small number of students relative to the overall population. Thats very true.
They only handle single digits in terms of percentage. But thats not what charter schools are all about to me," the governor said Sunday on AM 970's new "Cats Roundtable" program.
Cuomo appeared at a massive pro-charter rally in Albany early this month just as Mayor de Blasio -- who has said charters have been overly favored in the past -- addressed a separate gathering supporting raising taxes on the wealthy to fund prekindergarten programs.
Cuomo does not support that tax hike.

New York may not be a winning team yet after years of economic decline, but its turning around, Gov. Cuomo said Sunday morning.
You dont come out of the basement over night, Cuomo said during an appearance on John Catsimatidis inaugural radio show on 970 AM. he said. We have made progress. Every New York pays less taxes today than they did the day I was elected so the arrows are pointed in the right direction.
I think New Yorkers feel that and known that. And I think that gives them confidence.
Republican Rob Astorino, the Westchester County Executive running for governor this year, has made the question of whether New York is winning or losing under Cuomo his central campaign theme. Astorino says the state is losing.

The 24-hour news cycle has made governing much tougher, Gov. Cuomo said Sunday morning.
Asked by rookie talk show host John Catsimatidis on his new 970 AM show what he likes least about governing compared to when his father, former three-term Gov. Mario Cuomo, led New York, Andrew Cuomo didn't hesitate.
Cuomo focused on a 24-hour news cycle full of blogs and tweets that didnt exist during his fathers day.
The news cycle is much faster, and that changes the rate of the dialogue, he said. The dialogue is more constant. More frequent frequent chatter.
