HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) The Humane Society is teaming up with a village in Westchester County to help control the growing deer population.
Hastings-on-Hudson is implementing a technique called immunocontraception, a vaccine that would prevent deer from becoming pregnant for two years.
Experts with the Humane Society will tranquillize, tag and vaccinate deer with the contraceptive known as PZP.
Many residents applaud the mayor for choosing an alternative to hunting, but some arent sure it will work.

(22,651 posts)With the more complicated system, it will cost more money and time. Plus the deer will be running away more as they become wary of the people. More deer bolting crossing streets. Perhaps they can put a dye along with the dart system and save a lot of the time & costs. (not have to trank and ear tag)
Was wondering about the PZP and the deer breeding cycle?. They use the PZP birth control on horses, it works. But there is disruption with the horses natural breeding cycle. Stallions breed the PZP mares and there is no conception. So mares keep coming back into season every few months, stallions are much more active trying to breed. Stallions seem much more damaged from fights and lose a lot of weight with mares constantly in season. When the PZP wears off a mare can conceive and then the foal can be born out of season, like in the winter snow.
Does anyone know if deer have a similar breeding cycle as horses? I know fawns are born in the springtime. It would be pretty disruptive to have bucks running crazy year round (traffic accidents increase?) if PZP female deer keep coming into estrus, every couple months, year round.
