Corrections boss questioned over "baking" death of inmate Jerome Murdough at Rikers

Corrections boss grilled over "baking" death of inmate Jerome Murdough at Rikers
ERIN DURKIN

The city’s Department of Corrections chief faced grilling from the City Council Thursday over the death of a mentally ill veteran in an overheated Rikers Island cell.

Jerome Murdough, 56, was found dead in his cell in February - where he had “basically baked to death,” a city official told the Associated Press.

“How did the Department of Corrections let him die in his cell?” Fire and Criminal Justice Committee Chair Elizabeth Crowley demanded at a hearing, saying the homeless veteran, who was arrested for trespassing, never should have been locked up at Rikers in the first place. “Our city did a great disservice to him, and I think our city does this to hundreds of people if not thousands.”
