Budget gives caregivers a raise

By Tiffany Brooks

Part of the spending package for the 2014 – 2015 year approved by state legislative leaders will include a measure to increase wages for direct caregivers who serve persons with disabilities.

More than 100 Assembly members signed on to a letter asking for a pay increase for caregivers working with the developmentally disabled, pressuring Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate co-leaders Dean Skelos and Jeff Klein to include the wage increases in the budget negotiations.

At a press conference two weeks ago, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg said direct caregivers have not received a wage increase since 2006.
