Onondaga Lake now cleaner than some Finger Lakes, county officials say

Syracuse, N.Y. -- The cleanup of Onondaga Lake has been so dramatic that it's cleaner than some of the Finger Lakes for one key pollutant.

The level of phosphorus, which causes extreme algae growth, has dropped dramatically in Onondaga Lake, the county's top water quality official told Onondaga County legislators today.

Phosphorous levels have fallen in half in Onondaga Lake, to a level lower than those in Oneida Lake and in the Finger Lakes of Honeoye and Conesus, said Tom Rhoads, commissioner of the county's Water Environmental Protection Department.
