After scratching their plan for a new Las Vegas-style casino in Saratoga Springs and proposing a $300 million casino in East Greenbush, owners of the Saratoga Casino and Raceway are not stopping. They are hedging their bets by pitching a similar full-gaming location in Newburgh.
The racino owners' shot at securing one of New York's four upstate casino licenses comes as the Wednesday deadline arrives for applicants to post a $1 million fee required by the state.
"We are putting in a bid for a full-destination casino license down there. It's the best location in the region, if not the state," Rita Cox, a Saratoga Casino vice president, said Tuesday about the site in the Orange County town of Newburgh. The proposed casino site in the Hudson Valley/Catskills region would be located on nearly 70 acres off state Route 17K southwest of the intersection of the Thruway and Interstate 84.
Newburgh Acting Supervisor Gil Piaquadio said three other companies have looked at siting a casino in the town, just north of the city of Newburgh, but the Saratoga group offered the only solid plan it has seen. A public presentation is set for Thursday.

The owners of Saratoga Casino and Raceway have bought nearly 64 acres for its proposed project, The Casino at East Greenbush, for $2 million, according to documents filed Wednesday at the Rensselaer County Clerk's Office.
Two parcels at the north end of Thompson Hill Road at the intersection of State Route 4 were sold by Richard B. Lynd to Village at Thompson Hill, LLC.

East Greenbush
The vote seemed odd. Why was the Town Board in East Greenbush, of all places, backing a casino?
Now we know why. Just days after last week's vote, Saratoga Casino and Raceway said it wants to build a $300 million casino in the Rensselaer County town, on a hill above Route 4 and Walmart.
The chain of events raises two questions: Will East Greenbush residents get to give their opinion on the project prior to a potential state approval? Or did their Town Board just rob them of the chance?
