Chairman Ken Raymond said he will move Tuesday to shut down the voting site at the historically black campus after hearing talk that a professor had offered students extra credit for going to the polls, which he said was a violation of the law. He offered no proof.
Last week, the Watauga Board of Elections voted to close the voting site on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone.
Republicans on the Pasquotank County Board of Elections also voted last week to deny an Elizabeth City State University senior from running for city council, ruling that his on-campus address couldn't be used to establish residency. The county chairman said he planned to challenge the voter residency of other students at the historically black school.

(11,119 posts)based, in part, on counting college student populations as residents, then they should have the same rights to vote in the state of NC as any other residents.
It seems to me as thought the ACLU or somebody should be able to sue to roll back these new ID laws based solely on this fact!

But this is worse. Closing an early voting location at a historically black campus...it stinks to high heaven of burnt crosses, IMO.

(14,971 posts)She said that the Forsyth County board of elections has put off eliminating the voting site at Winston Salem State until next year and lawyers are down in Elizabeth City right now investigating that incident.

(19,841 posts)She did another really excellent job on the story tonight, all about this Winston-Salem crap at WSSU --and also the story from Boone about consolidating early voting sites so that 9,000+ voters have 35 parking spaces.
She briefly recapped the story about Ellie Kinnaird from last night also.
THANK YOU MSNBC and Rachel Maddow! Thank you for putting a national spotlight on North Carolina!

(14,971 posts)The DOJ really , really needs to get involved here.

(19,841 posts)How much longer can the DOJ watch this statewide voter suppression effort and NOT get involved?
I wonder if it's on their radar.

(14,971 posts)I read that Kay Hagan personally contacted the DOJ and asked them to get involved in NC as soon as possible.

(19,841 posts)--a good segment on NC. Covered the sleezy re-writing of the official minutes of the Wautauga Elections Board meeting in Boone to delete comments from a Republican elections official indicating that the election precinct changes do not save money and have no purpose except to make it harder for Democrats to vote.
Rachel then went on to talk about how the Winston-Salem newspaper did some sleuthing on the Wautauga meeting or otherwise nobody would know about this.
She also talked about the State Board of Elections meeting in Cary--this is the gist of that (from Charlotte Observer):
Josh Howard addressed nearly 500 local elections board members, directors and staff at a statewide training seminar, the first since all 100 county boards came under GOP control this year after 20 years in Democratic hands. Republicans now hold 2-1 majorities in counties because Gov. Pat McCrory was elected.
But the division has gotten more attention in the past week as Democrats and civil rights groups are fuming over actions by Republican elections board members in Pasquotank and Watauga counties that could make it harder for college students to vote.
Video footage of part of the tension-filled Watauga County board meeting last week has received more than 28,000 views on the Internet. Howard, a former federal prosecutor, urged the new board members to respect each other and the citizens who come before them.
"The real theme of the conference needs to be 'let's not have any more of our meetings show up on YouTube,'" Howard told the crowd.
