"CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The numbers from the first day of early voting in North Carolina are in, and Democrats are the clear winner. The North Carolina State Board of Elections says 118, 417 people voted on Day 1. Of them, 60,163 Democrats, 35,812 Republicans, 23,280 Unaffiliated and 162 Libertarians cast their ballots.
Democrats have long enjoyed an advantage in Early Voting, but these totals are closer to a presidential election instead of a midterm election, says political science professor and analyst Dr. Michael Bitzer.
"It does not feel like a traditional midterm election. It is eye-opening for Republicans in particular, and especially the Thom Tillis campaign, simply because this should a lean GOP year," said Bitzer.
Here in Mecklenburg County, Republicans are doing slightly better than their counterparts outside the county, Bitzer says. He believes the early numbers shows the enthusiasm of Democrats supporting Senator Kay Hagan."

(246 posts)Hope it holds! Quite a few early voters here in Wilmington also. I'm waiting until the early voting enthusiasm wanes and the lines get shorter. Proud to say this will be my first NC election. My vote helped end Republican control of New York 8 Years ago and hopefully it will help run the SOB's out of North Carolina too !

(19,841 posts)An order mandating an early voting site on the Appalachian State University campus remains in effect, as the N.C. Court of Appeals on Tuesday denied the State Board of Elections' motion for a stay. The early voting period begins Thursday.
SBOE spokesman Josh Lawson said Tuesday that the state board would likely hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon to determine where the early voting site should be located on the ASU campus. The SBOE last week solicited and received input from the Watauga County Board of Elections and ASU about an on-campus early voting site in case the Superior Court order was allowed to remain in effect.
---the vote hijackers wanted to get this early voting site removed to make it harder for students to vote...what other reason could they have? You can't hide this behind some vague voter ID argument.
Evil.

Friday after 5P, the library is normally closed and the patio/rooftop bars are in full effect, but during voting season, most library branches are early polling places and their hours are 10a-7p M-F, with shorter hours on the weekends and extended AM hours @ CPCC. 2 voters @ 7 workers.

(19,841 posts)--especially after what the US Supreme Court did to thwart Same-Day Registration:

RALEIGH, N.C. Same-day registration won't be allowed during early voting in North Carolina and Election Day ballots cast in the wrong precinct won't be counted this fall after the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked a ruling that had set aside parts of a 2013 election law.
A majority on the nation's highest court agreed to halt the ruling of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Two justices dissented.
The decision means the full law will remain enforced while the state and civil rights groups that challenged the law prepare for trial next summer. The full law was enforced during the May primary as well.
Early voting begins Oct. 23 and the registration deadline remains Friday, as originally planned.
