Florida teen, leader of online hacking group arrested for making threats to Elyria High School
ELYRIA, Ohio -- A 16-year-old from Florida was arrested last week for calling in threats to Elyria High School on three different occasions, including during the school's graduation ceremony, authorities said.
Elyria police investigators arrested the teenager Wednesday at his home in Keystone Heights, Florida. He was located inside his room, where several laptop computers and other electronic devices were found, according to a news release from Elyria police.
The teenager admitted to police he was the one who made several "swatting" threats to the high school in May, and was the leader of an online hacking group, the release said. Swatting has become popular in many online gaming circles where users call in prank threats to police resulting in SWAT teams being dispatched to investigate the calls.
Investigators were able to determine the threats were made from a phone in Florida and began working with local officials to obtain a search warrant and arrested the teenager.
