Ohio bill would rais speed limits and outlaw Left Lane Squatters

Look out, left-lane lollygaggers: Life in the fast lane might get a little less comfortable.

A new bill in the Ohio House proposing to increase the speed limit on interstate highways to 70 also would make staying in the left lane generally illegal unless drivers are exiting or passing slower vehicles.

House Bill 395 will have its first hearing on Tuesday.

Current Ohio law requires drivers to use the right or center lanes, with a number of exceptions. The proposed legislation essentially would limit the leeway of left-lane users to mosey down the interstates.

Accordingly, motorists would not be permitted to travel in the left-hand lane except when exiting, passing or allowing other vehicles to enter the right lane, or when existing road conditions would make driving a vehicle in the right lane unsafe.

About time someone kicks the squatters in the ass.

1. The squatters really are more dangerous

Than any speed demon. Topping a hill at 75 and finding someone in the left lane doing 50 in a 70 can kill that jerk in the left lane.

2. I think the left lane squatters increased with the use of GPS units

Some unit will tell the driver to keep left as they approach certain exits so the idiots get in the left lane and sit there.

5. I noticed people tailgating

even when I'm already doing over the speed limit. I'll be doing 70+, passing a truck, and somebody who wants to do 80 gets right up on my bumper.

How far should they stay behind me? A good rule of thumb is to allow one car length for every 10 mph speed. They should teach that in driving school.

...and stay out of the way. But once I am in the left lane, I am committed to passing. Bumper mounted stink cartridges have not been invented yet.

7. I can be going several mph over the maximum speed in the left lane...

...and still have cars riding my ass. Sorry, but there are left lane exits here. If I move right to let speeders pass, I risk being blocked from that lane by oblivious or asshole drivers when it is time to exit.
