Election day in PA experiences

Got up early this morning and made my way to the poll. There was a line when I arrived at just before 7AM. I was voter number 15 with probably an equal number behind me. The ballot is short and people were quickly in and out. When I left there weren't any voters coming in or arriving.

Usually the voters are old, angry white men (my precinct is pretty conservative and Republican), but there were quite a few women and a couple younger voters.

I just voted in Allentown, straight Democratic ticket (double checked that all my choices were, indeed, checked).

Something odd this morning, though. Normally, I sign in on a big register, and I have never been asked to show my ID. It seems they have switched over to an iPad check-in system, and they asked me for my ID, and when I told them I did not have to show one they weren't quite sure what to do. They conferred with each other, and I noticed there were the sheets that I used to fill out so they could look up my name, so I asked if I could fill that out and if there was an option for them to type it in to pull my signature up. That worked, but it took time and they had obviously not been trained on it. The poll workers were unfailing polite about it, and worked to solve the problem--much respect for them.

And, now they know how to do it.

When Phila finally got rid of the old lever voting machines, there was a big public education campaign on how to use the new machines.

I don't recall seeing anything, but I've been on a bit of a social media/news fast. However, none of my colleagues have heard anything either. I've been spreading the word to neighbors.

Getting the vote totals off the back for each candidate, then transferring that info to the official election results sheet was a bear. I kept thinking how easy it would be to accidentally transpose a number or put it in the wrong block or just write down whatever number you wanted. The voting machines were rarely opened to check machine totals against the filled out results sheet. The new voting machines were so much easier to use and they kept a mechanical total just like the old lever machines plus printed out the results.

Voters really informed themselves of the new machines' operation and many had tried them out beforehand at libraries and other locations where there were machines available for hands on testing. It turned out the hardest thing for them was exiting the booth after they voted because they were so used to the vote lever opening the curtains when they were finished. More than one voter asked how to get out (they just had to open the curtain with their hands) when they'd finished voting!

No one asked for my I'd. You must be on the West end. Old Bitties there try to keep minorities from voting.

My poll workers are PoC for the most part. I think this was just new technology. But I thought it worth making a note about it.

Wife went in at 7 as polls opened. She said it was mobbed. I'll go in later this afternoon. My precinct went overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016; we had more votes than any precinct in Reading that year. I'd consider the voter turnout in my neck of the woods to be a bad sign if you're hoping for a good outcome for Dems today.

I don't like Trump at all but I'm afraid all of this immigrant rhetoric has riled up his base to turn out just like they did when he carried this state in 2016. I can tell you there are a lot of people in my area who buy into this "war of cultures" argument Repubs have been making since 911. I don't know if Dems have figured out how to counter this effectively (my wife is convinced Trump will win reelection though she and I despise him).

there was a long line in Wyomissing this morning when my wife went to vote. When I got there about an hour later people were still in a long line (longest I have seen it in my 12 years here) and the majority were women. It appeared that people voted quickly so I assume they were voting the party lines - which I did for the dems

You can almost tell folks that were voting reThug - pretty much the angry looking old white guys - LOL.

Checked online and Wyomissing was about evenly split for your 5 precincts in 2016. We really need a report out from the City of Reading. People in the city have been unmotivated (gerrymandered and ignored) for a long time. Dems can't carry the county without them fully participating. Have no idea if the democrats have spent much time registering or with GOTV stuff in the city. Guess we'll have an answer in about 12 hours.

Wyo has historically been GOP but that has changed a lot over the years. We need the folks in the City to vote. We have been doing a large outreach on the Democratic Party side but folks still need to get out and vote. It will be interesting to see what the turnout is today...

... I can vote in the mid-morning and avoid long lines. Not worried because my precinct is small and most of the voters come after 5:00 p.m. My sisters and I decided to celebrate by going to see "A Star Is Born" this afternoon. None of us are turning on the TV until tonight. We can skip the meaningless chatter, and the real results won't be reported until later tonight anyway.

I'm ready for the BLUE WAVE! Best of luck to all Pennsylvania Democrats!

Our Democratic state rep candidate, Amy Cozze, greeted me at the entrance and handed me a slate of Dem candidates. When I got in, there were two people ahead of me, both of them young or youngish. I asked about how turnout was going and one of the poll workers told me I was about the 200th voter--at 10 in the morning! My precinct doesn't normally reach 200 voters until mid-afternoon.

I went in and voted straight Democratic, but one candidate at a time because I don't trust the vapor ballots. My precinct ran out of "I voted" stickers, btw.

I have a very good feeling, unlike 2 years ago.

17. Took a gander at a couple polling places
Tue Nov 6, 2018, 03:48 PM
Nov 2018

just after lunch. First stopped by my poll to chat with the Dem party rep handing out literature. 3-4 voters came while I was there. The Dem party guy said he was happy with turnout so far, said by his count there were 1400 voters in the 4 precincts in my township. I forgot to ask if those were just Dem voters or all voters. If it's just Dems, that's 1400 out of about 2220 total or 63%. If it's all voters, that's 1400 out of 5674 or 26%. This is a pretty republican area, so either way - Dems turning out or Rs staying home - is good. Since this guy was a Dem party guy, was keeping count and happy with the numbers, my guess is he told me Dems, but can't be certain.

Then I stopped by a poll in our small, rustbelt town. I talked to a couple poll workers who told me turnout was good and I saw 5 or 6 voters on their way in or out of the poll while I was there. This is a heavily Dem area and not usually great with turnout, but a local school board member stepped up to challenge the incumbent R state rep on the Green Party ballot line. She's well-known in the community and is probably driving turnout higher than usual.

The 5 of us who voted today counted 7 other people besides us who were there to vote.

My son will be voting after work (between 6:30 p and 8 p), and he expects to see more people then. Rural area. Farmers and folks who work elsewhere.

Voted at 11 a.m. in Westmoreland Co. I was #205. There was no line, but the lady said it had been steady all morning. We are in a small rural precinct. Only one person handing out cards near the entrance (for the local republican). Everyone seemed in quite a good mood!
