Dem training session set for2/9 at CCBeaverCo

Potential Democratic candidates and campaign workers in the Pittsburgh region will flock to the Community College of Beaver County on Saturday for a free training seminar.

“It’s a chance for us to talk to people directly in the community,” said Kelly Dietrich, the founder of the National Democratic Training Committee, which is holding the event in CCBC’s Health Sciences Center Building from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Historically, Democrats have focused on big races for the White House and Congress, but Dietrich said that needs to change. “We have to pay attention to local and state races,” he said. “Democrats for too long have been driven by a top-down strategy.”

Dietrich said Democrats made gains across the country in November’s so-called “blue wave,” but work needs to be done to build a grassroots base to continue the momentum. “You don’t regain the Pennsylvania state Senate overnight,” he said. “It takes time.”
