Gov. Corbett's budget would eliminate the last bits of cash assistance that is offered to the poor - which is $200 a month for a limited period of time. It is often used while persons are in recovery for drug or alcohol addictions or while people are waiting for a disability claim from Social Security.
Here is a new New York Times article on what has happened as the last bits of cash assistance have disappeared. In some cases, people turned to shoplifting and other crime to feed themselves. Les Miserables anyone?

(11,925 posts)That someday the poor their allies and will rise up and eat the rich, and take back everything the wealthy koch pig brothers and other unsocialized cold hearted greedy assholes have taken from everyone else year after year.
All I can say to the well off, fortunate and comfortable,be careful about who you vote for because there are people's survival at stake..
Because it's when bad enough and enough people have nothing to lose, but everything to gain by taking it to the streets. The class war that's been going on in this country from day one.It will be crystal clear, what and who the problems are and the sycophants of the rich will find no refuge in their masters. It will go until people decide they will not tolerate the intolerable forever. There is a time when reality trumps beliefs, ideals, preferences and qualms about having to do what you must to live. People will be free of the self denying restrains and they'll stand up and do the changes regardless of what the comfortable, well off people say,and regardless of what moral cowards afraid to use power say.
I think this will happen sooner as people are realizing the true sources of their financial misery.
One can hope.

(14,779 posts)Yes depends on what county you live in, determines how much welfare you get. One person gets $226 a month in Philadelphia and some other countries, $206 a month in Allegheny (Pittsburgh) and some other countries, $174 a month for most counties. The amounts have NOT changed since 1982. In the mid 1990s, then the Welfare Reform law took affect limiting time on Welfare for someone without children OR major disability to two months in a two year period, but what you received each month did NOT change and has not changed since 1982.
The $226 a month in Philadelphia and some other countries, $206 a month in Allegheny (Pittsburgh) and some other countries, $174 a month for most counties.is for ONE person, if you have more then add $65 a month for each person.
