Every year, the power brokers in Pennsylvania squeeze into their tuxes and pack up their cars and drive to Manhattan for their swanky Pennsylvania Society parties. Every year, the frackers, candidates and other interest groups ply the politicians with huge open bar parties.
With one notable exception this year. Governor Candidate Tom Wolf says he will not be providing a open bar party and banquet. Instead, he will divert that spending to donations to anti-hunger groups in Pennsylvania. This is nothing new - Mr. Wolf comes from a very philanthropic family. Like many of his close relatives, he and his wife have personally donated over $10 million to deserving causes, including to colleges in Pennsylvania.
Mr. Wolf had started to run for Governor in 2008. He had just sold off his family building supply business and was very comfortable financially. However, he received a call from a former employee that the new owners of that business were running the business into the ground, and hundreds of his former employers were about to become unemployed. He quit the race, bought back the business, and restored it to financial health.
