Tom Wolf, the leading Dem. candidate for PA. Governor today quoted Gandhi to explain why he has not responded with negative political ads, even though there is a constant barrage of deceiving and inaccurate negative ads being run against him.
Wolf studied Gandhi when he was a Peace Corps volunteer in India. It is worth noting that Martin Luther King used the proceeds of his Nobel Peace Prize to travel to India to study Gandhi's teachings.
Here's an excerpt from Wolf's interview on Phila. Public Radio station WHYY. The full 12 minute interview is available as an audio file at the top of the webpage at the link, and is worth listening to.
Wolf says he doesn't intend to start running negative ads. "That's not who I am, and I think it lays out a very good contrast," Wolf told WHYY Senior Reporter Dave Davies. "I was in the peace corps in India and understand and have read a lot about Gandhi. Gandhi felt that you can't separate means and ends, that you can't pretend to serve noble ends by getting there through ignoble means. And I think that's true of politics and a democracy."
Still, Wolf wouldn't promise that he won't run any negative ads if he wraps up the Democratic nomination. "At some point, I guess ... you want to hit back, but I am defending myself, even now, and saying no, this isn't true, that's not who I am. I don't think that's a negative ad."

(1,689 posts)like winning an election for no reason other than having the most money. Just cut the crap and get mean against Corbett when you're the nominee. With Wolf's long-winded, passionless responses I fear he'll make for a pretty easy punching bag but I hope I'm wrong.
Edit to add: We really shouldn't be acting like Wolf is such a great guy for not going negative when it'd be politically stupid for him to do so. When you're 25 points up, you don't bother with that.

(6,819 posts)I just received the PA. Republican Party's second attack mailing against Wolf. It features a picture of a large scary wolf, with big gnarly teeth, and says "Don't let the Wolf into the Statehouse?"
They really really don't want Wolf to be their opponent in November.
