Too many unanswered questions on proposed gas pipeline through Northampton County
Express-Times editorial on proposed pipeline through Carbon & Northampton counties:
"Right now there are more questions than answers about where the pipeline would go, connecting terminals at a UGI collection area in Luzerne County to a Transcontinental line in Mercer County. These are critical issues to everyone in and near the proposed path."
"Where a utility crosses preserved or historic areas, FERC must rule that an intrusion is outweighed by a compelling public need. Most important is how the pipeline would traverse populated areas. For private property owners, who could be subject to eminent domain, it could mean a financial boon or an invasion of privacy and sense of personal security."
"On the other hand, getting inexpensive shale gas to local markets and beyond is more than a boost in economic development. Last winter's spikes in gas and electricity prices in Pennsylvania and New Jersey were caused in part by variable-rate contracts, but also by cold-weather demand. Increasing transmission capacity could mitigate those shocks and provide a more reliable supply of energy for several decades."
Read the comments at the end. A lot of totally opposite opinions here in PA.
