Corbett: if you can't afford increased college tuition, become a gas driller

http://www.ydr.com/opinion/ci_20053174

Editorial from the York PA Daily Record

"If the proposed cuts to the state-related schools go through, that would mean their state subsidies would be cut in half in just a two-year period. That's incredibly unfair to current students who have the bad luck of attending school in the midst of these difficult budget times. The cuts would likely result in higher tuition, heavier student debt loads and lost opportunities for middle-class students who find they simply can't afford college.

Gov. Corbett has a solution for them, though: Go to a trade school and learn to be a gas driller.

Seriously.

...In a recent interview with Fox 43, the governor said state-related schools must learn to control costs - like private universities do. He cited Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster County. What planet is he living on? Tuition at F&M is more than $42,000 a year! Compare that to Penn State's current annual tuition of about $15,000.

Mr. Corbett also complains that state funding for schools has not resulted in lower tuition hikes. Good point. But there's a better approach than slashing state funding: Agree to maintain current levels of funding, but only if the schools hold tuition steady."

and become governor.

I have to wonder why our gov went to an out-of-state third tier law school when there are a number of very good law schools right here in PA. How much you want to bet he could not get into any of them? Three of the six law schools in PA are public universities that have been hardest hit by Corbett's budget cits. Coindence? I think not.

But between Ridge, Rendell, and Corbett, it just seems to be getting worse. My home territory was always bedrock blue collar and union. I can understand the demographic change over the decades but some days it feels like they have all gone nuts and can't recognize reality.
