Penn State faces $2.4M fine for violating federal law in Jerry Sandusky case
STATE COLLEGE - Pre-Sandusky Penn State took another public punch in the gut Thursday, as the U.S. Department of Education released a scathing report on the university's reporting of criminal activity on campus.
The department, citing numerous violations of the Clery Act that mandates transparency about campus crime, fined Penn State $2.4 million. It is the largest fine ever levied under the act.
It said the fine flows from 11 serious findings of Clery Act noncompliance related to Penn State's handling of former football coach Jerry Sandusky's crimes and the university's longstanding failure to comply with federal requirements on campus safety and substance abuse.
In many respects, Thursday's fine was not a surprise. And, it could be argued, it applies to problems that Penn State leaders have worked hard to correct over the last five years.
