Harrisburg City Council candidate stands by Facebook post comparing snakes to police

A Harrisburg City Council candidate Saturday posted a statement on Facebook saying she stands by remarks she made on her personal Facebook page Friday that snakes driven out of Ireland "slithered onto boats destined for the U.S. and became police officers."

"As a candidate for City Council, I stand by my remark made on my personal Facebook page," Angela Kirkland wrote. "I am not here to walk it back to make certain people more comfortable. I am an activist first and foremost, unapologetic about my pro-black stance and my ardent desire for drastic police reform."

Some of the people attending the city's St. Patrick's Day parade Saturday said they were dismayed by the way she wrote about police in her initial post.

"She seems to be calling all police officers evil," said Elizabeth Swain, 45, of Harrisburg. "It sounds like she hates all of them. I don't see how you can paint a group of people with that broad of a brush."
