Lancaster woman sentenced for theft of $78,768 worth of Social Security funds

A Lancaster woman will serve 15 months in prison for the theft of Social Security benefit funds.

Carmen Perez, 40, was sentenced Monday in federal court. She also was ordered to three years of supervised release after her prison term and to pay full restitution of $78,768.06 to the Social Security Administration, according to the United States Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Perez pleaded guilty in February to stealing the money while she was employed as a case manager for an organization that managed Social Security benefits for persons who could not manage their own funds.

Prosecutors said she stole Social Security benefits from 39 of her clients.
