South Carolina Teachers Call for Less Paperwork, Higher Pay
A delegation of educators from across the state showed up at the State House Dec. 12 to promote a “Teacher Bill of Rights” that calls for increased salaries and the elimination of “excessive and burdensome paperwork.”
The effort comes at a time when the state is seeing a continuing shortage of teachers. More teachers are leaving their jobs and fewer people are seeking them.
Approximately 6,700 South Carolina teachers left their positions during or at the end of the 2016-2017 school year, according to a report from the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advancement. That's up from the 6,500 who left their jobs the previous year.
At the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, districts reported 550 vacant teaching positions. a 16 percent increase compared to the previous year.
