South Carolina health care leaders discuss future of Obamacare on Capitol Hill
Thousands of South Carolinians who rely on Obamacare for health insurance coverage may be worried about what comes next, but they're not alone. The chief financial officer of Medical University Hospital told the Board of Trustees on Thursday the uncertainty poses a "huge threat."
Finance chief Steve Hargett said he hasn't calculated how much money the hospital will lose if the law is repealed but said the impact could be "fairly substantial."
"There will be more uninsured (patients)," Hargett said.
President-elect Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have vowed to repeal Obamacare early next year, but they haven't decided how they will replace it. Millions of Americans, including more than 200,000 people in South Carolina, depend on the federal law for coverage and are anxiously awaiting hard details. So are the hospitals, health care providers and insurance companies, all of which stand to lose money and customers if Republicans fail to replace the Affordable Care Act with an alternative.
