Perry taps Hecht as chief justice
Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday named the longest serving member of the Texas Supreme Court, Justice Nathan Hecht, to service as chief justice.
Hecht, who joined the court in 1989, will replace Wallace Jefferson as chief justice. Jefferson recently announced that he will step down Oct. 1 to return to private practice.
Hecht, 64, has written more than 350 opinions while serving on the states highest civil court and, like Jefferson, has made legal-aid funding a priority so more low-income Texans can have access to help for housing, family violence, child custody and other civil court issues.
I know Justice Hecht to be a man of the most upstanding character and integrity, with an uncompromising commitment to protecting the interests of the citizens of Texas, Perry said in a statement. As the most senior justice on the court, his dedication to the rule of law and wealth of knowledge and judicial experience will be invaluable as he serves in this new role.
