Former UT and NFL kicker Russell Erxleben to appear in court for second detention hearing

Former University of Texas football player Russell Erxleben will appear Friday before a federal district judge for his second detention hearing since his January arrest in a multimillion-dollar ponzi scheme that allegedly defrauded dozens of investors.

In May, Judge Andrew W. Austin ordered that Erxleben remain incarcerated until his trial, saying he posed a financial threat to the community and that there were no conditions he could impose upon a supervised release to keep him from offending again.

“He manipulates people,” Austin said at the time. “He manipulates them with fear. He manipulates them with guilt. He manipulates them with promises.”

The former NFL punter and three-time All-American kicker, who was arrested in late January and waived an initial detention hearing in February, is accused of masterminding a string of fraudulent investment operations as far back as September 2005, including a massive Ponzi scheme that paid out more than $2 million in nearly four years.
