George P. Bush discusses Hispanic issues at Lubbock chamber luncheon

The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce kicked off National Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting a Fiestas Patrias luncheon featuring Texas Land Commissioner candidate George P. Bush.

Bush — son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, grandson of former President George H.W. Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush — discussed the issues facing the Hispanic population across the state.

“What makes Texas so unique is our diversity, and that we are united in terms of common values,” he said. “Some of the issues we face in the Hispanic community here in Texas are Spanish completion in our education system here in Texas. We can do a lot better and expect more from our teachers, our administrators, our school districts because Texans deserve better.”

Do you see the name Bush as an advantage or a burden?

I see it on a net-net basis as a positive. The reason is because I can draw upon their advice and their recommendations when traveling around this great state. For me it has been a positive — the advice has been great. But, at the end of the day, I’m my own person running for this office, and I’ve got to talk about my background, my track record and why I’m qualified to bring my skill set to Texas.

You have ties to both Florida and Texas, why Texas?

Well, it is a big part of who I am. I was born in Houston, and went to Texas schools — Rice, the University of Texas. I met a beautiful Texan about 12 years ago, who I’ve been happily married to for about 10 years, and my boy, P. (Prescott), was born here. So, I’ve built my life here, and now it’s time for me to give back.

What are your plans for your political career for the next 10 years?

Well, if privileged to serve, I want to transform the General Land Office, and be the best land commissioner that Texas has ever had. That is my singular goal. What I’ve learned in my business career is you set out to accomplish a mission and if you are successful in doing it, good things typically happen after that.

Do you see the governor’s mansion in your future?

Right now I’m focused on the land office. A.G. (Attorney General Greg) Abbott is probably the likely Republican candidate and probably the next governor, and I’m going to support whoever our nominee is for that office. Right now, I think I can lend a lot to Texans through the General Land Office.

So George P. named his son Prescott, after his great-grandfather, the director of an investment bank that helped Hitler rise to power in Germany and who planned a fascist coup to overthrow the U. S. government? It's no wonder they call the little boy "P".
