School districts urge judge to overturn Texas funding system
Attorneys for hundreds of school districts urged a state judge Tuesday to again overturn Texas school finance system, arguing that the Legislature failed last year to fix the long-time problems that have plagued the system.
While school district lawyers credited lawmakers for boosting funding and reducing high-stakes testing, they contended that the actions fell far short of what is needed to make the school finance system constitutional and get the state out of court.
In the end, even after the recent reforms approved by the Legislature, the system remains inequitable, inadequate and irrational, said David Hinojosa of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He represents a group low-wealth districts.
State attorneys, on the other hand, said school districts benefited from a large funding increase and elimination of several required high school tests. Those changes take away their biggest arguments in the lawsuit, they said.
