Harker Heights mayor resigns over tax debt

HARKER HEIGHTS — The city announced late Friday afternoon that Mayor Mike Aycock resigned from office due to “unfortunate financial circumstances beyond his control.”

-snip-

A news release said Aycock was unable to fully discharge his property tax obligations before a Jan. 31 deadline, which disqualified him from holding office according to the city charter.

Although Aycock presided over a city workshop meeting Tuesday, by Friday afternoon his photo and name were removed from the city of Harker Heights website.

City Manager David Mitchell said the resignation does not disqualify Aycock from seeking re-election, so long as his tax obligations are resolved before taking office if elected. Aycock has filed for re-election.
