Questions About Primary Training For The Upcoming Election

I have been a Precinct Chair since '08. I thought as part of our mandated training that we were compensated for the training mid-term elections.

However, when I received my election letter I was informed that the Sec. of State has mandated that the training sessions do not compensate for the training.

My questions are

Has this always been the case and I was mistaken about being paid for training since '08?

If this is a new mandate then

When did this change?

Did the Legislator vote for this?

If they didn't vote for this then Can the Sec. of State mandate these changes


Also I noticed that we will only be paid a whopping $8 per hour. I suppose this is the big plan to keep people wanting to service their communities. Pay them as little as possible. Perhaps in the next few years it will totally be set up as a voluntary position.

Sheesh, even the Presiding Judge during the general election makes a dollar more than the A.J and clerks.

1. I went to training for the 2010 election, but was not paid.

Before that, in the '90's, I don't remember being paid then either. Just for the working at the poll. It used to be just $6 an hour.

2. The State

isn't paying for this. You're being paid by the State Dem Party. In the General Election, or other non-Party centric elections, you'll be paid by the state.

Call your County Party and ask them. While the training is provided by the State, the party is paying them for that time. I haven't actually paid attention for training compensation for a while. It's possible they ask that, the day of the election, you figure in your training time with the time you're putting down for transportation of materials to the election office.

I haven't gotten a letter from my county election office, so I can't see what it says yet. But I assume the party will pay you for your training time, either outright (I have a shady recollection of our county chair paying us AT the training session, but I could be Total Recalling that out of thin air) or you're asked to figure the time into your sheet when you fill out your payment info the day of the election (that yellow sheet that you fill out with your info and has the oath on it).
