Alice police chief asked to leave early after turning in resignation

CORPUS CHRISTI — Alice Police Chief Randy Weems confirmed Tuesday evening city officials asked him to leave his position immediately after he handed in his resignation the same morning.

Weems, 49, confirmed Interim City Manager Hector Hinojosa gave him a letter on his “accelerated resignation” after Weems informed officials he accepted another job and planned to leave June 1.

Weems’ city-issued mobile phone had been disconnected as of Tuesday evening, when he was cleaning out his office. Hinojosa could not be immediately reached for comment Tuesday.

“I’ll still be heading that way,” he said of his impending move, “but it’ll be whenever I get my affairs settled.”

Weems said the situation is similar to the treatment of former City Manager Ray de los Santos, who city council members said they chose to fire in November because he applied to a job in Corpus Christi.
