Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and his Republican challenger Sen. Dan Patrick clashed Friday over whether Texas has done enough to stop unauthorized immigration and illegal trafficking along the states border with Mexico.
At a lunchtime debate before the Republican Women of Kerr County, Patrick said the state has done appallingly little to shore up federal failings when it comes to monitoring the border and sealing off bad actors.
Patrick, a radio talk-show host from Houston who got elected to the Texas Senate in 2006, said he was disturbed to look at the state budget in his first session, in 2007.
There was not a dollar in the budget for border security, he said.

(21,046 posts)Patrick isn't a lawyer so he doesn't know about jurisdiction. The state cannot enforce the Federal immigration laws.

(30,058 posts)He showed how much respect he has for the Constitution by walking out during a Muslim prayer in the state house. If it is crazy he can say it. I don't like Dewhurst but we do not need Patrick. He bragged about saving 15,000 lives with his sonogram bill but does not want Texas taking the Medicaid expansion. Force the births and then let them die.
