Group calls on Texas Republican Party to endorse ex-gay therapy in 2014 platform

The Texas GOP platform already contains plenty of anti-gay planks, including statements that “the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society and contributes to the breakdown of the family unit,” and that “homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable ‘alternative’ lifestyle, in public policy, nor should ‘family’ be redefined to include homosexual couples.”

Now, the anti-gay Texas Eagle Forum wants to take things a step further. Right Wing Watch reports that the group has proposed the following resolution in the 2014 state GOP platform endorsing the discredited practice of ex-gay therapy:

WHEREAS Reparative therapy and other Sexual Orientation Change Efforts are based on the understanding that healing emotional wounds and reducing shame will reduce same-sex attraction and empower individuals to live in accordance with their own faith and values;
WHEREAS, psychological and spiritual counseling have been well-documented in scientific and psychological literature to help individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions reduce and/or eliminate their unwanted homosexual feelings;
WHEREAS, laws have recently been passed in California and New Jersey severely restricting the free speech rights of licensed therapists who support counseling/therapy to change or reduce homosexual behavior in individuals who seek their help;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that licensed therapists, psychologists and counselors in the state of Texas cannot be forbidden or penalized by any licensing board for practicing reparative therapy and supporting clients of any age with sexual orientation change efforts.

Perhaps Cathie Adams, who heads the Texas Eagle Forum, is still ticked that her husband, Homer, lost his longtime precinct chair seat to a gay man, Rob Schlein, the president of the local GOProud chapter.

In any case, while the Eagle Forum tries to move the Texas Republican Party backward on LGBT issues, the Washington Blade reports that a group of young conservatives has launched an effort to remove opposition to same-sex marriage from the national GOP platform in 2016.

Reparative "therapy" is a dangerous, quack practice that has precisely ZERO studies or research in it's favour. It shouldn't be banned on minors as it is in Cali and NJ, it should just be banned outright in the same way and for exactly the same reasons as selling snake oil.

Then again, we're talking about a bunch of determindly stupid scumbags who think evolution and modern cosmology are just something dreamed up on teh way back from the pub and disbelieve climate change even when you can literally watch the fucking glaciers disappearing. The US would be a hell of a lot better if Texas voted to secede and the rest of teh country voted to let them.

this policy a little more. I would suggest they all get together around a conference table, have some glasses of cold milk and some of those wonderful Honey Maid Graham Crackers. I tried them and they are delicious. Just a thought.
