Houston Mayor Annise Parker includes citywide job protections in proposed Human Rights Ordinance

It looks like weeks of pressure from LGBT advocates has paid off.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker’s office on Monday released the proposed text of a long-awaited Human Rights Ordinance, and it includes a citywide ban on employment discrimination.

Parker previously indicated that an earlier draft of the proposed ordinance didn’t include citywide employment protections, leading to a major push by LGBT advocates to have the provision added.

In addition to private-sector employment discrimination, Parker’s proposal would ban discrimination citywide in housing and public accommodations. It would also ban discrimination in city employment and by city contractors.
