WASHINGTONGiving the millions of Americans making low wages a federally-mandated raise would actually hurt more people that it helps, Sen. John Cornyn says.
A bill that would have raised the nations minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would have eliminated jobs, Cornyn asserted today during his weekly call with reporters, hours after he and fellow Republicans blocked the bill in the Senate.
Democrats have pushed the increase for months. Cornyn and fellow Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, as well as nearly all of their GOP colleagues, voted to block the bill. Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee was the lone Republican to vote to move forward on the bill.
Theres a much better way to deal with income inequality and low income than the federal government mandating what those wages should be, Cornyn said.

Republicans say they want you to work their way up. But when you ask for more money, they say it's too much.
What gives? How are you supposed to live if you work but never get more over time?

(23,965 posts)40 hours a week is 2080 hours a year. At $10.10 an hour, that is a mere $21,008 a year. I would like to see Cornyn try to live on that.

(9,113 posts)I wonder how many Texas workers who are going to take it on the chin from Cornyn's actions are going to reward Senator Cornyn for his vote by staying home this November and let the Republicans send him back to the US Senate so he can spend another six years sticking it to the less-fortunate of Texas and the rest of the US?
You would THINK that even if less-fortunate Texans aren't enthusiastic about whoever gets the Democratic senatorial nomination, they'd go to the polls to punish Cornyn for his votes.
