Democrat chief sees shift in Texas, blasts GOP for undermining voter rights

WASHINGTON – The Democrats’ national chairwoman predicted Wednesday that Texas will soon join a growing list of states that are shifting reliably from GOP control to her party grasp – a list that already includes Virginia, Colorado and Nevada and could soon include Arizona and Georgia, as well.

But, said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Republican-led efforts at voter suppression are meant to put the brakes on the inevitable.

“They know that when more voters turnout, Democratic candidates win,” she told reporters over a newsmaker breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor at a hotel near the White House.

Last June, the U.S. Supreme Court scrapped a key provision of the landmark Voting Rights Act that put Texas and eight other states with a history of discrimination under intense federal scrutiny. The law required those states and some smaller jurisdictions to get pre-approval from the Justice Department or a special court before making any changes to election rules.
