Dewhurst slams Patrick over comment on blocking bills
AUSTIN Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst slammed GOP rival Dan Patrick on Monday for saying hed block certain legislation that he opposes even if a majority of senators back the bills.
In a TV debate last week, Patrick said that as lieutenant governor, he would not allow a bill making it easier for women to sue over wage discrimination to come up for action in the Senate. Patrick said he would stand fast against the measure no matter how many senators favor it.
Dewhurst, who faces Patrick in the May 27 runoff, said he could not remember derailing any bills that the Senate majority supported, though he acknowledged seeking changes in some he had reservations about.
As the Senates presiding officer, the lieutenant governor oversees the flow of legislation there and appoints its committees. Its not been uncommon for some lieutenant governors in the past to withhold bills they opposed from Senate consideration.

Dewhurst and Patrick were scheduled to appear Monday before the Williamson County Republican Womens Club, but Patrick canceled after his wife became ill. As a former resident of Georgetown in Williamson County, I do not hesitate to say that the other residents there are eternally grateful that Goeb-Patrick didn't show.
