State commission calls for closing 6 institutions for the disabled
The state should close Austin State Supported Living Center and five other institutions for people with disabilities, which would mean moving at least 1,000 residents into the community and cutting 4,400 jobs, a state commission recommended Thursday.
The Sunset Advisory Commission which regularly reviews agencies for the state and makes recommendations for their future has released its report on the Department of Aging and Disability Services, which runs the 13 state living centers for people with intellectual disabilities. In that report, the group suggested shuttering the Austin facility, which employs 1,500 people.
Other than the Austin institution, the commission did not specify which other centers should be closed.
The Austin SSLC has had more trouble complying with basic standards for safety and adequate care than any other SSLC, the report states.
Closing six centers would ultimately save the state more than $87 million and eliminate 4,404 jobs by 2020.

It will be great for private business though. The state will be able to sell the property near 35th Street and MoPac. Meanwhile, the residents in those living centers will have to find care in private facilities.
