In times of crisis, our world discovers its true leaders — those individuals who not only take charge, but come up with real solutions based on clear thinking that benefits all.

Unfortunately, it is also in times of crisis — real or perceived — that many people, including politicians, respond in the worst way possible.

So easily, they give in to their basest fear. Or even worse, they incite it. They look for a scapegoat or respond only to the loudest, shrillest voices. At a time when the public looks to them for leadership, they instead gravitate toward their instinct, which is political survival.

This year, Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins has defied the fearmongers and shown true leadership and a calm, level head. For this reason, Jenkins is my nomination for 2014 Dallas Morning News Texan of the Year.
