Lubbock City Councilman calls State Senator Charles Perry a racist and bigot

Lubbock City Councilman Victor Hernandez slammed State Sen. Charles Perry and the lawmaker’s proposed “sanctuary cities” bill in a statement late Thursday.

In a statement released via Facebook, Hernandez called the Lubbock Republican a bigot, racist and unchristianly for authoring Senate Bill 185.

SB 185 would cut off state funding for local governments that prohibit their law enforcement officers to inquire about the immigration status of people they stop or detain. The bill still awaits a vote in the Texas Senate.

The chamber’s Veteran Affairs & Military Installations Committee voted last week for Perry’s Senate Bill 185 strictly along party lines. The four Republicans on the panel voted for it and the three Democrats voted against it, according to a previous A-J Media story.

The bill faces strong opposition, particularly from civil libertarians and Hispanic groups.
