An outbreak of chlamydia, a sexually transmitted disease, has been reported at a small West Texas high school.
KOSA-TV of Odessa and Midland reports the Crane Independent School District sent a letter last week to parents of Crane High School students informing them that 20 cases of chlamydia had been confirmed at the school. Crane High School has an enrollment of about 300 students.
State health officials had notified the district of a significant number of chlamydia cases reported in Crane County and adjacent Upton County. District officials plan meet with the school's advisory committee of teachers, parents and school officials to discuss the situation Monday.
Chlamydia is curable, but if left untreated can cause permanent damage to women's reproductive systems.

(9,109 posts)Another right-wing idea brings evil fruit. The hapless children of Crane and surrounding area suffered a one-two punches where not only STDs and how they were spread were not discussed, but the ideologues, religious dreamers, and Tea-baggers shut down Planned Parenthood clinics serving the needs of low-income women and their families.
Abstinence might be a noble ideal and something some people might be able to keep to until they legally become adults and even fewer can adhere to until they can afford to marry and set up their own households--their late twenties for most folks these days. The majority of young people become sexually active long, long before then.
Politicians should not play games with public health. The local and state-level politicians doing so should be fired by the wrathful voters in their districts.
