Sad news from Fort Worth: Our own Jim Wright, Former Speaker of the House has died

He passed away on Wednesday at age 92 after a long illness.

Whenever local Democrats held an event, fundraiser, or other gathering he would do his best to attend and was incredibly supportive to all who sought elective office here.

He accomplished many things in a long career but he was still 'just one of us". We attended the same church and became friends over time. I shall miss him a great deal, as will many many others.

I don't recall the events leading up to his resignation, but wasn't happy to see him forced out. And I think that's pretty cool you got to develop a friendship with him. There were a couple other similar stories like that in the initial LBN thread.

We can produce great people out of this state, and great friendships. This does feel more like a personal loss for us all.

We tend to focus on the bad, goofy, and downright nutcases, and fail to give you credit for the truly remarkable people from Texas. Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan are always at the top of my list. Despite the war, LBJ is still a favorite of mine...we will see very few "larger than life" figures like him again.
