GEORGE WEST Geronimo {the longhorn and mascot for the my high school I attended} has been long awaiting his make-over and the big day finally arrived on Thursday.
Crews worked all morning to remove the plate class windows of the iconic longhorns display case to unbolt him from his stand and to hand-carry him out onto the courthouse lawn. From there, Geronimo was loaded onto a trailer and driven to Hiblers Taxidermy in Kingsville for the restoration work.
The trip to Kingsville was amazing, said Leslie Walker of the Save Geronimo committee. We were greeted by owner, Joe Hibler. He is 82 years old, sharp and energetic and was excited to see G again.
Hibler still has a photo on the wall of his shop of himself and Geronimo from 1976. His taxidermy shop performed the last restoration on the iconic longhorn in preparation for his tour to Russia, 40 years ago.
