Southern Methodist University reaches $1 billion fundraising goal
DALLAS -- Southern Methodist University, which opened 100 years ago on a plot of North Texas prairie land, has raised $1 billion to support new programs and projects in its second century.
The Second Century Campaign is the largest in the private universitys history. The money will be used for the schools endowment, scholarships, academic positions and campus construction.
It puts SMU among 35 private universities across the country that have raised $1 billion or more through major gift campaigns. They include Columbia University, the University of Notre Dame and Vanderbilt University.
University President R. Gerald Turner will formally announce the milestone on Thursday as part of a kickoff to SMUs homecoming weekend. The fundraising campaign will continue until the end of the year.
