That’s how Sen. Ted Cruz’s position in Washington has been characterized this week. His popularity within the clubby U.S. Senate, already not great, dropped to new lows. Friction with Sen. John Cornyn — usually shielded from public view by both Texans – surfaced on the Senate floor, reflecting frustrations on both sides.

“To me, the best analogy is if everybody on a football team wants to call their own plays, and when they don’t like the play the quarterback calls, they decide to sack their [own] quarterback. That’s not a way to win. And that’s not a way to successfully promote our goals,” Cornyn said.
