Amarillo Anti-Muslim rally turns into tolerance rally -- attendance of one for anti-Muslim rally

Lone protestor William Teague appeared at the tail end of the protest to express his anti-Muslim opinions.

More than 100 people came out to the Khursheed Unissa Memorial Community Center in anticipation of an anti-Islam rally, but all but one latecomer were in support of the community center.

“All of these people are supporters of the center,” Amarillo Police Department Cpl. Cody Lavery said. “Everything’s been very peaceful so far, and the protestors haven’t shown up yet.”

The Amarillo-based protest, dubbed the Global Rally for Humanity, initially was started in opposition to the 20th anniversary of the Million Man March in Washington, D.C. The march Saturday in the nation’s capital was led by minister Louis Farrakhan of the National of Islam.

Amarillo residents caught wind of the protest planned for 1 p.m. at the Khursheed Unissa Memorial Community Center on Soncy Road and organized a counter-demonstration in support of the center, which was established by Dr. Ali Jaffar in memory of his mother, Unissa.
