Corpus Christi teachers not happy with new $1M math curriculum

CORPUS CHRISTI -- The Corpus Christi ISD paid nearly a million dollars for it, but teachers say it was a bad deal.

We're talking about a new math curriculum that was implemented this school year.

Our local teachers union, the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, is fighting to change it.

They say new textbooks and workbooks are confusing and ineffective, especially at the kindergarten and first grade levels.

TEXAS: Statute prohibits public employees from entering into a collective bargaining agreement. Statute also prohibits strikes by public employees. - See more at: http://education.findlaw.com/teachers-rights/teacher-s-unions-collective-bargaining-state-and-local-laws.html#sthash.Mn5wXiVT.dpuf

Teachers can do very little about the direction of CISD Math Curriculum: The use of the word Union in this article has a separate meaning. In Texas the AFT is a union of teachers, whereas the AFL-CIO is a Labor Union. AFT is a member of the AFL-CIO. A teacher can be a member of the AFL-CIO but must follow state labor laws.

Was a new District Math Coordinator hired? If so, how did that come about?

I think that $1 million is an extraordinary amount to pay to an outside vendor though, particularly if the school district already has salaried employees.
