A few quotes on education from some reading

The benefits of education and of useful knowledge, generally diffused through a community, are essential to the preservation of a free government
~ Sam Houston

Cultivated mind is the guardian genius of Democracy, and while guided and controlled by virtue, the noblest attribute of man. It is the only dictator that freemen acknowledge and the only security which freemen desire
~ Mirabeau B. Lamar

We cannot understand ourselves as a nation until we are willing patiently, wisely, and with almost superhuman tolerance to investigate the complexities of our life.
~ Ruth Allen, CHAPTERS IN THE HISTORY OF ORGANIZED LABOR IN TEXAS, 1941

As far back as 1836 the Texas Constitution has provided for the establishment of public schools.
Here is the provision in the current (1876) Constitution:

ARTICLE 7. EDUCATION

Sec.1 SUPPORT AND MAINTENANCE OF A SYSTEM OF PUBLIC FREE SCHOOLS.
A general diffusion of knowledge being essential to the preservation of the liberties and rights of the people, it shall be the duty of the Legislature of the State to establish and make suitable provision for the support and maintenance of an efficient system of public free school

It is only the yahoos curently in control in Austin ( from Perry - real f*****g soon I hope!) that have no regard for education.

just sayin'

Quote Houston's and Lamar's statements back at right-wingers like Debbie Riddle, Donna Bell, and other Tea Party types who have been hysterically claiming that public education is socialist or communist.

I don't know if it would be effective, but I'd like to see TV ads portraying Lamar and Houston making those statements around election time when Riddle, Campbell, and Bell make such riffs again (which, alas, they probably will).
