Judge OKs Sherwin Alumina plant closure agreement

GREGORY — Union employees at the now-shuttered Sherwin Alumina Co., locked out of their jobs the last two years, will receive severance pay under a plant closure agreement.

U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge David R. Jones on Thursday signed an order authorizing the Gregory plant's closure and the layoff of its workforce, according to court filings. As part of the order, eligible workers will receive $2,000 severance and will retain some pension right and retirement benefits through Dec. 31.

Officials for Sherwin Alumina and its Swiss-based parent company Glencore declined comment when reached Friday.

News of the agreement is the latest development in an often-complicated labor dispute that has percolated in Gregory since talks between employees and management fell through 25 months ago.
