Sgt. G.M. Tippit, oldest Dallas Police Department retiree, Jack Ruby acquaintance, dies at 96

Gayle Marshall "Tip" Tippit, the Dallas Police Department's oldest living retiree, has died.

Tippit, Badge No. 710, served the Dallas department for 30 years, including work as a detective. He was not related to Officer Jefferson Davis "J.D." Tippit, who was killed by Lee Harvey Oswald on Nov. 22, 1963. But he did know Jack Ruby, who killed Oswald on live television.

G.M Tippit, 96, died Tuesday at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas of complications after a fall Nov. 16.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Restland Funeral Home's Wildwood Chapel. Visitation will begin one hour beforehand.
