$10 million given to families of Dallas officers slain in downtown ambush

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings announced a $10 million Christmas present to soften the devastating blow for families of the Dallas police officers who lost their lives on July 7.

"No amount of money will heal the wounds from that night, but this is the world's small Christmas gift to you in memory of those that you love," Rawlings told the families and loved ones at a presentation Tuesday at City Hall. "We simply want to do anything and everything we can to ease your pain."

The $10 million will be split equally among the five families and is intended to go toward their health and education expenses and general support. That money will go into trusts for the family members of the five officers killed: Brent Thompson, a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer, 43; Dallas police Sgt. Michael Smith, 55; Senior Cpl. Lorne Ahrens, 48; Officers Michael Krol, 40; and Patrick Zamarripa, 32.

A small portion will go to the nine officers injured in the line of duty that night.
